What is a GMO?

GMOS

GMO stands for genetically modified organism. These are man-made organisms made by splicing genes from other organisms to help create a more desired trait for an otherwise natural substance. It is common that strands of genes from bacteria are spliced into fruits and vegetables to produce crops with certain desired traits.

GMO may improve crops growth, sustainability and ease of farming. It’s usually a cheaper and faster way to achieve a desired trait.

So, are GMO’s bad for you? Well the FDA considers it safe for human consumption. However, there has been extensive research linking GMO to cancer, allergies and environmental issues. There is research also showing that there are few risks, so the bottom line is more long-term research is needed to come to a conclusion.

Most common GMO crops include corn, soy, canola, and sugar beets. These are usually the source of sugar in most processed foods. When it comes to processed or fast foods, it is best to go organic and choose home cooked meals.  For me personally I think there is enough research to say I would rather avoid GMO whenever possible.

A great reference for GMO is the Non GMO Project. When products have the NON-GMO verification seal that means the manufacturer has gone thru third party testing to ensure it meets the NON GMO Project standards. Check out the nongmoproject.org for more information about the risks of GMO in our food supply.
